Crew Member Shares Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.
She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of space.
The diverse crew also included experts in multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a well-known tech mogul.
